Autism is a disease that affects almost 1 out of every 150 people. It is a childhood disease that sticks with an individual throughout their lifetime and makes it difficult for them to be able to fit into society. There are many different ideas of what causes autism in these individuals and why it would be on the rise at this particular time. We know that autism is caused by hereditary means and also may be caused through chemicals that are indicative of birth defects. Something that many people are considering now is that the disease is caused as a result of vaccinations that are given to children. At this particular time, there is no scientific corroboration of this particular theory.

The autism ribbon is a simple way that you can help to raise the awareness of this particular disease. And just like any other ribbon, it is a U shape that crosses in the middle and has its own unique color. This particular ribbon is red blue and yellow and is in the shape of puzzle pieces all across the ribbon. Some of the ribbons also display the words autism awareness on them. You can wear these ribbons as pins on your clothes, decals on your shirt and even display them on your bumpers.

As more and more people are affected by this terrible disease, additional support will be necessary, not only for the individuals with autism but also for family members they care for them. Show your support for everyone involved by displaying your own autism ribbon proudly.

Autism Fact #1
Because of the special way autistic minds function, normal teaching methods don’t work. Understanding how the autistic mind functions, allows you to take advantage of this functionality to provide specialized teaching that will help young autistic minds learn much more rapidly than they could with standard teaching methods.

Autism Fact #2
The autistic mind tends to function in a visual manner. Specialized teaching for autism makes heavy use of pictures. Using words to describe something is nearly useless. Providing pictures of what you are describing is much more successful. Even better though is taking the child to see the actual item or place being described.

Autism Fact #3

Take advantage of the natural skills an autistic child may have, instead of focusing on weaker points. It is interesting to note that although autistic children tend to be visual and are often very good at drawing, they can also be very good with music. Take advantage of this by creatively using music and art as part of teaching other topics.

Iris goes to Hank and Tommy’s house, and when Hank yells at her to go away after she knocks and calls out to him and he refuses to answer the door, she walks right into the house, since Hank left the front door unlocked. Iris tells Hank he forgot to say good night. Hank replies that he didn’t want to spoil her party. Iris tells Hank she was worried about him, and that the party isn’t important. Hank tells Iris he didn’t fit in with her old friends, including the mayor and Felicia Gallant, and that it’s not going to work, so Iris should just go back to her penthouse where she belongs. She tells Hank it isn’t true that he didn’t fit in and refusing to leave, because tonight she belongs here with Hank. She thought when they went to get the Christmas tree for Tommy, they were getting closer together. Hank tells Iris she thought wrong. Iris knows that Hank is upset, but doesn’t understand why he is treating her like this. He tells her that maybe he did need her tonight, but when he got up to her penthouse, she was too busy serving champagne and caviar to a bunch of phony, rich snobs with diamond tie pins and gold watches that cost more than he makes in a year to give him any of her time. Iris tells Hank he doesn’t have to be intimidated by those people. Hank yells that he’s not intimidated by those people, but he had the distinct impression he was embarrassing Iris, so he left. Iris tells Hank that he was not embarrassing her, and everyone at that party was a family member or friend of hers, so Hank had every right to be there. Hank says if that’s true, how come he wasn’t invited to the party? Iris wants to try and explain, but Hank says there’s nothing to explain. He never expected to be invited to one of her fancy shindigs. Iris says the reason she didn’t invite him was that she knew he was worried about Tommy, and under the circumstances, she didn’t think he would enjoy himself. Hank tells her she’s got that right, and that he would have had more fun at a manic depressives’ convention. Iris tells him to stop being so sarcastic and be honest with her–he’s not upset about the party, he’s upset about Tommy. Hank yells at Iris to stop telling him how he feels; Tommy is his son, not Iris’s. Iris says she knows that her loss won’t be as great as Hank’s, but they’re going through this together, whatever Hank thinks. Hank asks Iris since when did they become an item? They don’t even know each other; tonight proved that. Iris asks how Hank can deny what’s going on between them. They’re more than friends, and he knows that. Hank retorts that they’re not even friends. They have nothing in common, except the bad luck to bump into each other outside some sick kid’s hospital room. He gives her her coat and tells her to just go home, but Iris throws the coat down and yells that she’s not going anywhere until they’ve had this out, and she grabs Hank’s face and demands that she look at him. Doesn’t Hank know Iris cares about him? Hank says Iris cares about Tommy. Iris tells Hank that right now, she cares about him, and they kiss. Thanks to Janie for the scenes.
