After the September 11 terrorist attacks on the USA, some news outlets asked or ordered their on-air personnel not to wear American flag lapel pins, red, white, and blue ribbons, or other patriotic symbols in order to "maintain an image of impartial neutrality" and to lessen the chances that overseas reporters could be harmed by those who might view them as an arm of the American government. Prominent among these outlets was the ABC network:

"ABC News has asked its staff not to wear American flag pins in their lapels, or even red, white and blue ribbons, in an effort to protect their credibility as objective sources.

"We cannot signal through outward symbols how we feel, even if the cause is justified," said ABC spokesman Jeffrey Schneider. "Overseas, it could be perceived that we’re just mouthpieces for the U.S. government, and that can place our journalists in danger."

The FOX smears are continuing and we need to stop them from spreading to the rest of the media. Watch FOX’s laughably inaccurate distortions, as they smear Barack Obama on everything from the economy to race to patriotism to flag pins.

In the coming weeks, FOX will escalate its gross misrepresentations of Obama, and we know from painful past experience that some in the corporate media will spread FOX’s canards by presenting them as fact. We must stop the spread.

Now that you’ve had the chance to watch we need you to make sure everyone else sees the distortions as we work to stop them. Sign our petition and demand FOX stop serving up blatant lies for the rest of the media to swallow. It’s critical that you send it to everyone you know, get it to your local newspapers and TV stations, and post it on blogs and networking sites.

This is a game show because satires sometimes can be a powerful weapon. Let’s use it to make sure the media know that when it comes to Obama, The FOX Is Wrong!

It’s not a binding law, mind you (the First Amendment trumps it), just the code of conduct Congress adopted oh-so-long-ago as the standard for how the United States Flag should be treated. Still, we have an official standard our government honors (such as the President ordering flags to be flown at half-mast to express national mourning).

So I’m curious, since I haven’t heard anyone else mention it in light of the matter… does anyone else know what our Flag Code has to say about things like the flag pins and what people are supposed to do during the national anthem?

Mayberry– Like all things Congressional, the Flag Code can be a bit "thick". However, it says everyone "in uniform" (military uniform, basically) should come to proper military salute for the duration of the anthem. All other citizens should place their right hand over their heart, and all men wearing hats should remove them with their right hand and hold it at their left shoulder so their right hand covers their heart (dee has the custom right, but the directions reversed).
Honest Rob– Actually, the official standard for what does and doesn’t constitute a flag is:

"The words ‘flag, standard, colors, or ensign’, as used herein, shall include any flag, standard, colors, ensign, or any picture or representation of either, or of any part or parts of either, made of any substance or represented on any substance, of any size evidently purporting to be either of said flag, standard, colors, or ensign of the United States of America or a picture or a representation of either, upon which shall be shown the colors, the stars and the stripes, in any number of either thereof, or of any part or parts of either, by which the average person seeing the same without deliberation may believe the same to represent the flag, colors, standard, or ensign of the United States of America."

In short, if it’s made to look like a United States flag and your average person would look at it and think of a flag, it’s considered a United States flag before anything else.

However, a flag patch may be affixed to the uniform of military personnel, firemen, policemen, and members of patriotic organizations. The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing. Therefore, the lapel flag pin being a replica, should be worn on the left lapel near the heart.
