Face The Nation: It’s The Patriotiotism Not the Flag Pin

Posted on February 18th, 2010 by admin in flag pins | 23 Comments »

With any luck, Bob Schieffer’s commentary at the close of Face The Nation will end all further discussion of lapel pins.

Finally, today, I watched the ABC debate the other night when that question came up again about why Senator Obama doesn’t wear a flag pin in his lapel. Since no one asked me, here is my thought on all that. I think it’s a nice thing if people want to wear a flag on their lapel. But I believe it more important to keep the flag behind our lapel in our hearts. I feel the same way about wearing my religion on my sleeve. It just fits me better on the inside. When I go to see our local baseball team, I do wear my Washington Nationals baseball cap. But am I less a fan if don’t wear it to work? The truth is I have been known to wear a red, white and blue stars and stripes tie on the Fourth of July. But am I less patriotic when I trade it for my Santa Claus tie at Christmas? Patriotism is no more about signs or pins than religion is about reminding others how pious we think we are. No, the proof in these puddings is not the signs that we wear, but how we act. Wouldn’t that also be a better way to judge our presidential candidates than by the jewelry they wear?

Are you listening, MSM? Let’s get back to the issues. Not the cult of personality issues, but actual issues facing this country and how we’re going to get out of the mess we’re in.

    Can someone just …
Can someone just deport the all ready. More like the commander in thief.

obama has lost respect of the Police Force, and now the CIA. The troops hardly do either. Wouldn’t be surprised if his own secret service shoots him.

    Guess you forgot …
Guess you forgot that obama is pouring gas on the fire with this reckless spending, and appointing geithner (NY Federal Reserve) as his treasure.

Yes Bush tripled the size of Federal Government, but I guess you forgot that obama doubled that tripling, and is now appointing communist, anti American czars that don’t answer to congress.

  4. lizardfirefighter110 Says:

    Ok, Ill judge him …
Ok, Ill judge him on his patriotism since he became President. His grade is an F-. All of the that Bush left on the Constitution is still there! Americans are still dying for a cluster occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan. The banks and the Federal Reserve fleeces America for 900 billion+ dollars and Obama throws us a bone “Cash for Clunkers”. I am so happy I could a rock.

    Guess you’re not …
Guess you’re not aware that anyone who becomes president of the USA is a puppet of international bankers. Bush, Obama, Clinton are all working for the same criminals on wall-street.

    Guess you forgot …
Guess you forgot that G.W.Bush doubled the debt and caused the crises that President Obama has had to address.

    Obama also has the …
Obama also has the best position on Iraq by far. He will end our occupation, plain and simple, but will do it responsibly. I trust his judgement in this regard. He does not want to be a occupying power.

Regarding Israel, yes, he will maintain the US support of Israel. The good thing is he recognizes the difference between supporting Israel and supporting everything the Israeli right wing stands for. Resolution of the I/P conflict is more likely under Obama than anyone else.

  13. justlooking58 Says:

    I disagree that …
I disagree that Obama supports a nuclear strike against Iran. In fact that is entirely counter to the diplomacy-oriented approach he favors. Of all presidential candidates, he is the least likely to bomb Iran–nuclear or otherwise.

Regarding Pakistan, personally I agree with his position to take out Osama if we have clear intelligence and Pakistan won’t act (possibly because they can’t, politically.) He would not bomb villages but would have a surgical strike against Osama.

  14. RationalLiberty Says:

    and will maintain a …
and will maintain a U.S. presence there. The war wont end in other words. He has also funded the Iraq war, and that is irresponsible in itself.
In palestine, he has taken the wrong decision again, siding with Israel (though I have heard his heart sides more with Palestinians). I must take him at his word, and if he cannot take a leading role in condemning Israel’s criminal actions on the campaign trail, I can hardly trust him to take similar stands in office.
    What do you think?

  15. RationalLiberty Says:

    On Iran, it is …
On Iran, it is inconcievable to me to actually think a nuclear strike is on the table, especially with what we know about Iran. I think it is irresponsible for him to support that.
On Pakistan, he says if Osama is in there and we have intelligence and if Pakistan wont act, we will. To me, this is a violation of international law and a democrat’s abuse of preemptive war. Bush has his Iran, Obama his Pakistan.
On Iraq, I am saddened by Obama. He will not “get out” so far as I can tell…

  16. RationalLiberty Says:

    I actually agree …
    I actually agree with that.
My problem lies with his policy decisions. Personally I think he is inexperienced in foreign policy, which may not be bad if he chooses to not take a stance, but he does, and for me it is the wrong stances.
On Iran, Pakistan, Iraq, and Palestine, he seems to have taken the wrong positions. If he says this only to get elected, I have a problem with that-to me it questions his integrity. But I must take him for his word, so I feel I cannot vote for him.

  17. justlooking58 Says:

    I think Obama has …
I think Obama has the intelligence, the integrity and the values to make an excellent president, in the mold of Abraham Lincoln. With his background, he understands the rest of the world far better than most politicians, he believes in transparency in government (a very welcome relief after the nefarious and secretive Bush presidency), he believes in grassroots involvement in government (just as he has had in his well-run campaign) which is what democracy is really all about in the first place.

  23. zacbleicher Says:

    So what catndryer? …
So what catndryer? His point goes beyond liberal/conservative politics. He’s saying that patriotism comes from the heart, not empty superficial gestures like wearing a pin. Let’s be honest, some if not many politicians wear the flag pin to “look” patriotic, but they don’t necessarily act patriotically. For instance, almost every member of the Bush administration dodged the Vietnam draft. But now because they wear a flag pin we are supposed to overlook that, right?
